I tell my students this all the time. People and cultures are complex, they allude categorization and quantification. They contradict each other just as much as they contradict themselves. Scientific and mathematical methods have their very important place in the hard sciences, but their role in the humanities is limited and often precarious. Using computer programs to analyze biased histories based on limited archival data & in an attempt to tell the future is foolish and dangerous.
